Poem 7.
sun
gods speak through lustered skies
sun gods speak through
lustered skies and emerald seas and crystal sands
they move through weightless gulls that
float on seamless drafts of liquid air
they pass through matter dark and transcendent
blaze enclad in cosmic light
they whisper through dream-filled silence
of translucent space
and weave the threads of frozen time
from umbrella blind on ocean strand
the artist spoke to sunblest keepers
of timeless time with palette void of sound
he painted sails and surf that cupped
the gentle breath of heaven
he pictured curling birds with feathers
touched by pearly white and satin gold
he fused the cloudless sky with horizon
lost to sight and sense
he drew the burnished kelp and bubbled
froth which muffled pebble chatter in the salted surf
and the suntouched children
the shining children with starfish and
seashells and castles of sand
the mother and the infant son, the father,
daughter, dog, the umbrella close and pulsing breeze
the muscled man in flowered trunks, the
nubile nymph with ribbon string of lace
these chosen heirs of Apollo's court
in sacred memory of Olympus past
this was an idyll of beauty and freedom
and thalian grace
a moment of candescent gods and vapored
time
a gifted presence from windowed space
of colored song and primal light
in a garden of regal lords of earth and
water and sky and sun
