Artist's Statement
Michael Pedziwiatr, MFA
Twenty years ago and a whole lot of water under the bridge,
I find myself at that same spot - making images and striving
to make each one a bit more powerful than the last. Alchemy,
adversity, relationship, and dialogue are the terms which
come into my mind when people ask what my paintings are
about. A relationship may exist between two forms at opposite
corners of the canvas, or two colors woven into each other.
A
dialogue exists when the forms, colors, brushstrokes, and
figures within the rectangular canvas speak to each other.
Of
course, the most significant dialogue occurs when a person
becomes a viewer in front of a painting. I believe all artists
strive for the alchemist's magic. They are attempting to trans-
form a viewer's experience into gold. The process of layering
paint upon drawing, upon brush-strokes, upon hundreds of
marks, triggers the alchemist's quest to transform lead into
gold, or dreams into reality. A paintbrush represents lead,
the
finished canvas is golden. The swimmer is also a metaphor
for
all artists striving and laboring to make it to the other
side.
Swimming is hard work and so is making art! If the viewer
easily understands what everything means within one of my
works then I have failed. There must be mystery. The painting
must reveal itself only over a long period of time. It must
never
reveal itself totally. A person must see surprises, and make
new
discoveries each time that they view my work. In the end
making art is difficult work, but it is a profession unlike
any
other. It has many unique rewards - some are strange, some
are golden.
